Namibia is the perfect introduction to Africa. Safe, vast, and sparsely populated—with a beauty that leaves you speechless. Anyone who has visited understands why this country holds such a lasting grip on so many people.
From the red sands of the Kalahari and the Fish River Canyon to Etosha National Park, spectacular landscapes and breathtaking wildlife set the stage for unforgettable experiences.
I will never forget getting up close to rhinos and cheetahs in the Kalahari, or seeing lions, elephants, zebras, and herds of antelope in Etosha Park—and watching the animals at the waterhole while enjoying a sundowner.
The view from the rim into the Fish River Canyon—the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon—is one of those moments that simply leaves you silent. We drove our 4×4 down into the gorge, flanked by millions of years of geological history, all the way to a small lake deep within the canyon.
One highlight follows another: Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, Dune 45—sand dunes in a shade of orange that defies photography, as no picture can truly do justice to the reality. I love climbing the dunes, not just for the view, but for the feeling: silence, vastness, nothing but sand and sky. The scenic flight over the dunes to the Atlantic at sunset—that was one of those moments beyond words.
The Atlantic coastal town of Swakopmund has retained a touch of German colonial charm and offers wonderful beach walks and delicious seafood.
And then: Etosha. A waterhole, a sundowner, a hundred zebras drinking at dusk. That is Namibia. And the best part is, you don’t have to compromise on anything. The lodges here—set in the wilderness beneath a starry sky—offer a level of comfort that makes you forget just how far you are from home. Until, that is, you look up and see the Milky Way.
